The Juvenile Division was created in 2007 to assist local District and County Attorneys with the prosecution of criminal cases arising in the Texas Juvenile Justice Department ("TJJD"). SPU's role is similar to that of the Criminal Division in that it allows for oversight and transparency of TJJD by virtue of SPU being an independent agency. Experienced juvenile prosecutors work closely with TJJD's Office of the Inspector General to investigate and, when appropriate, prosecute offenses committed by juvenile offenders in the custody of TJJD. SPU also reviews, and when appropriate, prosecutes allegations against civilians and TJJD staff for improper use of force, sexual offenses and any other offenses committed in the course of their TJJD duties.
